All About the Ancients – Stepping into the Ancient World!

Last week we began an exciting new short course – All About the Ancients – led by Mrs Jackson.
Over six weeks, our students will journey through the fascinating civilizations of Greece and Rome, uncovering the stories, ideas, and everyday realities that shaped the foundations of Western culture.
Starting with language – the very words that carried their thoughts across centuries. From the elegance of Ancient Greek to the power of Latin, they will explore how these languages worked, and even encounter mysterious scripts that scholars are still trying to decode.
Then, they will dive into the myths. These aren’t just old stories – they’re windows into how people understood love, power, fate, and the gods. As they unravel these tales, they’ll see what truly mattered in ancient societies.
Art and architecture come next, where beauty meets ambition. From towering temples to intricate sculptures, they’ll discover how the ancient world expressed its ideals in stone and paint—and why so much of it still stands today.
But history isn’t just about monuments—it’s about people. They’ll learn about the bustling streets of Rome, Athens and Pompeii, exploring what life was really like for both the wealthy elite and the working poor. What did they eat? Where did they live? How did they navigate their world?
Of course, it wasn’t all work. They’ll also uncover how Greeks and Romans relaxed, celebrated, and entertained themselves—from festivals and feasts to games and performances.
Finally, our students will investigate the figures who defined these civilizations. Not just the legends, but the real people behind them—complex, flawed, and fascinating.
By the end of the six weeks, the ancient world won’t feel so distant. It will feel alive.
